### Grammatical Gender in French Animals

In French, every noun has a grammatical gender (masculine or feminine). When memorizing animal vocabulary, always learn the definite article (*le* or *la*) alongside the noun:

- **Masculine (*le*):** *le chien* (dog), *le chat* (cat), *le cheval* (horse), *le poisson* (fish), *le papillon* (butterfly).
- **Feminine (*la*):** *la vache* (cow), *la souris* (mouse), *la chèvre* (goat), *la tortue* (turtle).
- **Elision (*l\'*):** When a masculine or feminine singular noun starts with a vowel or silent 'h', *le* or *la* contracts to *l'* (e.g. *l'oiseau* - the bird, *l'ours* - the bear).
- **Tricky False Friends:** Notice that *le poisson* (fish) has two 's's. *Le poison* (one 's') translates to poison!
